Whilst tartan has been around for nearly 4000 years it has evolved throughout the centuries into the much-loved tartans we know today, heavily influenced in the 17th and 18th centuries by Scottish Highland Dress the first known tartan from Falkirk, Scotland dates back 1800 years.
Tartan is a Gaelic word for ‘criss-cross’ a series of intersecting straight lines that form a pattern. This pattern can include a range of colours running along both the warp and weft (horizontal and vertical) axes to create motif of interlocking stripes known as a ‘sett’.
Clan tartans are the distinct tartan patterns and colours pertaining to a particular family group or clan.
