Wool vs Fleece: Which Picnic Blanket Wins?

Fleece picnic blankets are everywhere ~ cheap, light and sold in every supermarket and camping aisle each spring. So it's a fair question: why would you pay more for wool?

The honest answer is that fleece isn't a bad choice for every situation, it has genuine advantages. But once you compare the two properly, the differences that matter most for a blanket you'll actually rely on outdoors become clear.

Where Fleece Genuinely Wins

If you need something ultra-light for a single festival, want a spare blanket to leave permanently in the car without worrying about it or are buying for a child who'll grow out of interest in it within a year or two, fleece is a perfectly reasonable choice. It's inexpensive, packs small and dries quickly if it gets wet.

Warmth that holds up

Wool fibres trap tiny pockets of air, which is what allows them to insulate even as temperatures drop or the day turns damp. Fleece feels warm on contact, but it doesn't manage moisture or temperature swings the same way, which matters on a day that starts sunny and ends with a cool breeze, as most British picnics eventually do.

It's built to survive being folded, rolled and reused

Fleece is prone to pilling and flattening with repeated use. You'll likely notice it looking tired within a season or two of regular outdoor use. Wool's natural crimp helps it spring back into shape, which is a large part of why a well-made wool blanket can still look and perform well after many years of regular use, while a fleece blanket bought the same year has often already been replaced.

The sustainability case

Fleece is a synthetic fabric, almost always made from polyester ~ a fossil-fuel-derived material that doesn't biodegrade and sheds microplastic fibres every time it's washed. Wool is a renewable, biodegradable natural fibre. If sustainability factors into your buying decision at all, this is one of the clearest differences between the two materials.

Cost per use

A fleece blanket costs less to buy, but if it's replaced every couple of seasons while a wool blanket is still going strong after a decades, the wool blanket often works out better value over time ~ not to mention that it looks and feels considerably nicer to sit on in the meantime.

So Which Should You Buy?

If your picnic blanket needs to survive damp grass, changeable weather, regular family use and years of folding into the car boot, wool, ideally with a waterproof backing is the better long-term choice. If you want something ultra-cheap and disposable for occasional, low-stakes use, fleece will do the job without complaint.

For most people buying a blanket they actually intend to reach for often, wool earns its higher price tag within the first couple of seasons.
